Four firms have been shortlisted to design Qatar‘s Lusail Stadium, the centerpiece for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Foster + Partners, David Chipperfield Architects, Mossessian & Partners and Mangera Yvars Architects are now competing to design the 80,000 seat stadium which will host the international event alongside Zaha Hadid‘s Al Wakrah stadium and others.
The new shortlist comes after a previous plan was scrapped, as the organizers felt the designs did not “reflect modern Qatari design and culture.” As a result, the four practices now on the shortlist have been asked to attend workshops “to ensure the fresh design met expectations.”
Foster + Partners have already previously worked on a design for the stadium, with their ‘Lusail Iconic Stadium’ concept forming part of Qatar’s initial bid for the event.
Alongside Fosters and their high-profile London competitor David Chipperfield Architects, are two lesser-known practices who have experience working in Qatar. Mossessian & Partners is known for their masterplanning work in Doha, whilst Mangera Yvars is nearing completion on their Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies, also in Doha.
